Step-by-Step Guide to Migrate from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

Here's an easy-to-understand guide for migrating to Google Analytics 4 (GA4) even if you don't have technical knowledge.

1. Find your Analytics account and check which properties you need to migrate

  • Visit the Google Analytics website at https://analytics.google.com/.
  • If you're already signed in to Google, you'll go directly to Analytics. If not, you'll need to sign in with your Google Account and password.
  • Once you're signed in, look to the upper left, to the right of the Analytics logo, and click the down arrow next to the name of your property.
  • Under Properties & Apps, find your property. Universal Analytics property IDs start with UA and end with a number (UA-XXXXXXXXX-1).
  • Check if you need to migrate your Universal Analytics property. Click Admin (lower left), ensure your desired account is selected in the Account column, select the Universal Analytics property you want to check in the Property column, and click GA4 Setup Assistant.
  • In the Google Analytics 4 Property Setup Assistant, find a notice that says "Not Connected" or "Connected." If the notice is red and says "Not Connected," you need to migrate【.

2. Run the GA4 Setup Assistant wizard

  • In Google Analytics, click Admin (lower left).
  • Make sure that your desired account is selected in the Account column.
  • In the Property column, select the Universal Analytics property that you want to migrate.
  • Click GA4 Setup Assistant, then click Get started under I want to create a new Google Analytics 4 property.
  • In the Create a new Google Analytics 4 property pop-up screen, click either Create property or Create and continue based on what you see.
  • On the Set up a Google tag page, select the option that best describes your situation and follow the instructions to finish creating your new GA4 property.

3. Install a Google tag

  • Click Next to install a new Google tag on your website.
  • On the Installation instructions page, choose between:
  • Install with a website builder: If you manage your site using certain website builders (or "CMS platforms," like Wix or Duda), you can finish setting up your Google tag without making changes to your code.
  • Install manually: Choose this option if your website builder/CMS does not yet support the Google tag (gtag.js), or if you or your web developer are manually tagging your website, or if your website is tagged with analytics.js, or if you use Google Tag Manager.

4. Finish setting up your new GA4 property

  • After you're done with the wizard, you'll see "You have successfully connected your properties" at the top of your Google Analytics 4 Property Setup Assistant page.
  • Note your GA4 property's name so you can find it later.
  • Click Go to your GA4 property. This will open the GA4 Setup Assistant in your new GA4 property.

5. Turn on Google Signals

  • In Setup Assistant, look for "Turn on Google signals" and click the Actions menu to the right of the row.
  • Click Manage Google signals.
  • On the Google signals data collection page, click Get started.
  • On the Activate Google signals page, click Continue.
  • Click Activate.

6. Migrate your goals

  • Return to the Setup Assistant page.
  • Look for "Set up conversions" and click the Actions menu to the right of the row.
  • Click Import from Universal Analytics.
  • Select which goals you'd like to recreate as conversion events in your new Google Analytics quote("1. In the Setup Assistant,", "5. Click Activate.")quote("1. Return to the Setup Assistant", "5. Click Import selected conversions in the top right")
